A Practical Parent’s Guide to Navigating Special Education Services

This book was written for one purpose. To help parents of children with autism understand and successfully navigate the special education system.

Inside you’ll find a breakdown of what special education services actually are and how the law requires schools to adapt to your child, not the other way around. Guidance on recognizing whether your child might need additional services. A clear explanation of eligibility meetings, what to expect and how to advocate for your child. A step-by-step look at the IEP process. What it includes, why it matters and how it protects your rights. Insight into non-public schools and when a specialized setting may be the best fit.

Along the way, Dr. Thomas strips away jargon and replaces it with practical advice, examples and encouragement. The book also includes resources, acronyms and references parents can use long after they close the last page.
